Sala Rim Nam at Avani Resort Pattaya were the hosts last Friday for Monsoon Valley’s Wine Paring evening, where guests and wine lovers not only enjoyed and savoured the varied selection of wines on offer but also sampled many Thai dishes prepared by the chefs at Sala Rim Nam.

Scrumptious food and fine wines all in a breathtaking and romantic Thai-style setting.

The wine supplier for the evening was Siam Winery along with Monsoon Valley.

Monsoon Valley was founded in 2001 by Chalerm Yoovidhya, a wine-loving entrepreneur with a vision to create a Thai wine culture.

‘Monsoon Valley Vineyard, is located Baan Khork Chang, a pristine valley 35km away from sunny Hua Hin beach. The site was built on a former elephant corral, a sublime place where wild Asian elephants once lived. The grapes for Monsoon Valley Wines are grown in three locations: Monsoon Valley Vineyard at Hua Hin, Tab Kwang Vineyard and Chiang Mai Vineyard. Hua Hin Hills, the largest of the three, spans over 700 Rai (about 110 Hectare) of uncultivated land which will never be used for farming purposes and serve as a retreat for the local wildlife.’

The stunning and perfectly lit Sala Rim Nam with traditional Thai Salas in an outdoor garden shaded by lotus ponds and leafy palms was the evening’s backdrop as guests mingled enjoying the sparkling wine on offer as you arrived along with live cooking food stations with Avani chefs preparing BBQ Pork Spare Ribs in teriyaki glaze.

Other food stations included charcuterie and cheese with condiments (pepperoni, salami, chorizo, pastrami, edam, gouda, emmental, brie and blue cheese). Spicy salmon tartare, pomelo salad with shrimp, spinach quiche, pork satay, fish finger with tartar and tomato sauce and if that doesn’t sound enough just to finish you off a desert station with apple compote, wild berry compote, mango with sticky rice, and carved seasonal fresh fruits.

A Monsoon Valley representative walked everyone through the evening explaining the wines on offer all paired with a complementing dish. The evening’s ambiance was also enhanced with live acoustic music.

The first two wines were Colombard and Chenin Blanc. The first being a delicate and elegant white that was paired with a papaya salad roll following onto the Chenin Blanc with a richer and more lingering finish presented alongside a melted cheese with chorizo on focaccia at a live cooking station.

Monsoon Valley’s Shiraz Rose was up next preparing you to cross the bridge from white to red. The pale pink salmon-coloured wine was a little racier with hints of red fruits and black pepper.

So, to the reds, first was a Dornfelder accompanied with grilled tenderloin in a balsamic gravy and then onto my personal favourite of the evening Monsoon Valley Shiraz a medium-bodied wine with a lovely fruity flavour and BBQ lamb cutlets in a Penang sauce.

Sala Rim Nam is in the grounds of the Avani Resort on Pattaya Beach Road.
