Established in 1888, the landmark once welcomed merchants, diplomats and travellers from around the world as they arrived in Siam, as Thailand was formerly known. Following a significant heritage restoration project, the national treasure begins a new chapter as an intimate riverside sanctuary where heritage, culture, gastronomy and celebration come together.
Home to 60 guestrooms and 15 suites, the hotel features the Main Custom House Building alongside two other meticulously restored heritage buildings, including one of Thailand’s earliest post offices, and a contemporary accommodation wing. A BANGKOK LEGEND
The Custom House complex’s story traces back to the Bowring Treaty of 1855. An emblem of Siam’s economic opening, the neo-classical, Palladian main building, which was designed by renowned Italian architect Joachim Grassi, began operations in 1888.
For more than six decades, Custom House served as Siam’s gateway to the world and a crossroads of commerce, diplomacy and culture. It was one of Bangkok’s most prestigious venues, hosting diplomatic functions and celebrations, including the grand reception in 1907 to welcome the return of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) from Europe. Custom House’s enduring architectural, historical and cultural significance was formally recognised in 2002 when it was registered as a protected national monument.
Now, as The Langham, Custom House, Bangkok, the restored heritage complex once again commands a striking presence along the river, with its defining architectural character carefully preserved.
Rather than recreating the past exactly as it was, the approach respects the landmark’s rich history while giving it renewed purpose for the future. In that spirit, the hotel’s distinctive yellow façade reflects the Custom House complex’s original colour palette from 1888, uncovered during the restoration process.
This balance between preservation and renewal is reflected in the hotel’s contemporary wing. Designed by renowned Thai architect Smith Obayawat, Founder and Principal of OBA, the curved structure was conceived as a respectful counterpart to the heritage buildings beside it.
He describes the relationship as one of different generations within the same family – the Custom House as “the grandfather” and the contemporary building as “the grandson”. Together, they create a hotel experienced in many ways: the restored buildings form its social heart, home to restaurants, bars and grand event spaces, while the new wing is dedicated to stays and wellbeing, housing all 75 rooms and suites, Chuan Spa and the fitness centre.
The contemporary building further connects with its surroundings, with a curved form inspired by the movement and flow of the Chao Phraya River and a faceted glass façade that captures shifting reflections of the water. Further details, including balcony screens inspired by the distinctive colours of the Custom House, add a subtle link to the original building.
