Chiang Khan is a small town at the Mekong in the Loei Province of Thailand.
What was once a sleepy, little-known Mekong-side town full of traditional timber shophouses has now become a popular domestic tourist destination with many gift shops and cute cafes, having said this Chiang Khan is far from spoiled and is still a charming place to visit and has probably the most impressive monks morning alms giving in Thailand.
The natural scenery and teakwood houses remain as picturesque as ever, but much of the town now has a kitsch appearance.
The photogenic views of the river and the Lao mountains beyond are breathtaking, as are the old buildings, and things remain peaceful in the daytime before the evening shopping begins.
Chiang Khan is also famous for its walking street with buskers, artists, and street-food vendors that by evening turn the street into its own little charming town.
Once in Chiang Khan, you can pretty much get around on foot, most guesthouses are on Chaikhong street (Walking Street).
Chiang Khan has a smattering of ancient temples and natural attractions to ensure there’s enough to do, while the presence of the Tai Dam people makes it possible to purchase exquisite cotton wears direct from these adept weavers and what better way to end a day than a hypnotizing Mekong Sunset.
Another place to check out is, Kaeng Khut Ku, Located on the Mekong 5 km outside Chiang Khan, Kaeng Khut Khu waterfalls can be seen when the water level is good enough, they are located in front of a beautiful mountain landscape and when seen from the river themselves they are spectacular.
Overall Chiang Khan is a truly Charming place to visit, take a walk over the river banks, shop, eat and watch the sunset.

เมื่อครั้งที่เชียงคานเป็นที่นิยมในหมู่นักท่องเที่ยว …… คราคร่ำไปด้วยผู้คน เชียงคาน ณ วันนี้ยังคงความงามของสังคมชนบทได้เป็นอย่างดี
หากจะพูดถึงสถานที่เช็คอินยอดนิยมเมื่อ 3-4 ปีที่แล้ว เราจะเห็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวยอดนิยมที่คุ้นหู นั่นก็คือ ” เชียงคาน ” วันนี้เลยถือโอกาสมาสัมผัสไอหมอกริมแม่น้ำโขง….. อีกฟากฝั่งนั้นคือประเทศเพื่อนบ้าน…..เสน่ห์ของเชียงคานผมว่ามันอยู่ที่ผู้คนและสิ่งปลูกสร้าง ถึงแม้ความเจริญจะคืบคลาน แต่ เชียงคานก็ยังคงไว้ซึ่งความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ รอยยิ้มทักทาย และสำเนียงการพูด พร้อมทั้งบ้านเรือนที่คงรักษาไว้เป็นอย่างดี
ตกเย็นลองเดินลัดเลาะไปตามริมแม่น้ำโขงเสียงเพลงจากฝั่งลาว ลอยข้ามมายังฝั่งไทย ทำไมเรารู้สึกอุ่นใจอย่างบอกไม่ถูก มันรู้สึกเหมือนเราไม่ได้อยู่คนเดียว ยังมีอีกฝากฝั่งประเทศที่อยู่ใกล้ๆเรา มันอบอุ่นอย่างบอกไม่ถูก
หลังจากเดินเล่นจนเหนื่อยบรรดาพ่อค้าแม่ค้า ก็ต่างพากันตั้งร้าน นำอาหารและเครื่องดื่มตลอดจนของที่ระลึก ออกมาตั้งร้านกันอย่างคึกคัก ชอบจังบรรยากาศถนนคนเดินที่เป็นชนบทแบบนี้ อาหารการกินละลานตามากครับ เดินร้านนั้นออกร้านนี้ พูดคุยกับบรรดาพ่อค้าแม่ค้ากันอย่างออกรส
เดินเล่นกันจนอิ่มและต้องรีบเข้านอน เพราะพรุ่งนี้เช้าเรามีภารกิจต้องห้าม…พลาด ตักบาตรข้าวเหนียวที่หน้าโรงแรม ตอน 6 โมงเช้า จัดแจง ปูเสื่อจองพื้นที่ หวนให้คิดถึงตอนเด็กที่หิ้วปิ่นโต วิ่งตามคุณยายไปวัด จัง ^^
อาหารเช้าของวันนี้คือข้าวต้มและปาท่องโก๋ พร้อมด้วยโอวัลตินร้อนๆ นั่งดูหมอกลอยเหนือแม่น้ำโขงที่กำลังไหลเอื่อยๆ พร้อมๆกับนั่งปรับทุกข์กับเพื่อนเก่าที่ไม่ได้เจอกันมานาน …….. ความสุขที่ไม่ต้องพยายาม มันก็เป็นแบบนี้สินะ
