Thailand has been chosen to host the Miss Universe 2018 pageant.

The 67th Miss Universe will be the third time Thailand has staged the event in 15 years. It last hosted the contest in 2005. The pageant is slated to take place this December 17 according to president of T.W. Investment Group Thanawat Wansom, whose company has received the organising licence.

The press announcement of Thailand’s selection was conducted by president of WME/IMG Co Paula Shugart with Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters of South Africa present. The location of the pageant is expected to be Impact Muang Thong Thani.

Miss Universe has been taking place since 1952. Thai beauties Apasara Hongsakul (1965) and Pornthip Nakhirankanok (1988) have each worn the crown. The Kingdom will be represented this year by Sophida Kanchanarin.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha has expressed his appreciation of Thailand’s selection, calling it an acknowledgement of the country’s potential. He remarked that Thailand’s selection was likely due to its political stability, safety and capabilities.
