THE LIVING LEGACY OF THE BELITUNG ARCHIPELAGO

A Commitment to Nature and Heritage at Tanjung Kelayang Reserve

Across the Belitung archipelago, where 200-million-year-old granite formations rise from crystal-clear waters and forests meet the sea, Tanjung Kelayang Reserve stands as a guardian of nature and heritage. Spanning 350 hectares of protected coastline, islands, and cultural landscapes, the Reserve forms part of the UNESCO Global Geopark network, safeguarding ecosystems while honouring the traditions that have shaped Belitung’s identity over centuries.

Shaped by time and movement, the island’s surroundings unfold through shorelines formed by changing tides, forests framing the horizon, and seas long navigated by passing vessels, carrying a quiet sense of continuity and connection. Offshore, the historic Dutch lighthouse on Lengkuas Island has stood since 1882, quietly watching over these waters. Once part of a historic Golden Triangle alongside the Srivijaya epicentre and Muaro Jambi, Belitung lay along ancient maritime routes through the Strait of Malacca. What remains today is a sense of connection that continues to flow through the island’s landscapes and seascapes.

A Guardian Within the Landscape

This commitment is expressed through Tanjung Kelayang Reserve’s long-term stewardship. Recognised in April 2021 as part of Belitung’s UNESCO Global Geopark, the designation reflects the island’s remarkable geological formations, rich biodiversity, and long-standing cultural life. More than half of the Reserve remains protected, allowing forests and island ecosystems to regenerate naturally over time, guided by observation and restraint rather than intervention.

Along its coastline, this philosophy takes form through some of Belitung’s best-quality private beaches. Sheltered by granite boulders and framed by calm waters, these secluded stretches offer space, privacy, and a sense of stillness rarely found elsewhere. The shoreline remains clear and open, allowing an unhurried connection with the sea to unfold naturally.

Stewardship Guided by Natural Rhythms

Care for the environment at Tanjung Kelayang Reserve is expressed through quiet, deliberate choices. Fresh water is sustainably sourced from surface reserves, leaving underground sources undisturbed, and supported by Zero-emissions water treatment plant developed using locally adapted kaolin clay. As water moves through layers of fine white clay, clarity is restored in a slow, natural process that mirrors the island’s own rhythm. Rainwater collected in reservoirs seven to twelve metres in depth provides a steady supply throughout the seasons, sustaining daily life while offering essential access for wildlife during extended dry periods.

Beyond its physical beauty, Belitung is increasingly recognised for the feeling it leaves behind. Often referred to as the Seychelles of Asia, the island reflects a similar archipelagic spirit that feels open and spacious across scattered islands and wide seascapes. Belitung remains distinctly its own, shaped by local rhythms and a quieter pace of life that allows the experience to unfold naturally.

A New Direct Link from Singapore

Belitung’s story is beginning to reach beyond its shores. Shaped by nature, heritage, and a considered way of living, the island is drawing those who seek depth rather than spectacle. Located just a 50-minute flight from Singapore, with direct services to Tanjung Pandan expected to commence in May 2026, access becomes part of the experience, opening Belitung to an international audience and expanding the ways the archipelago can be discovered.

In a travel world that moves ever faster, Tanjung Kelayang Reserve invites a different way of arriving. Here, care is practiced quietly, time is allowed to slow, and nature and heritage are held in trust. The journey does not end at arrival, it softens, unfolds, and lingers long after the moment has passed.
