Eight Years of the Ford Ranger Raptor: The Globally Acclaimed High-Performance Pickup Built by Thai Craftsmanship

Rayong, Thailand – Back in 2018, images of a pickup truck soaring through the air before landing smoothly on rugged off-road terrain sent shockwaves through the global automotive industry. It was more than just a dramatic vehicle launch—it marked the world debut of the Ford Ranger Raptor.
Eight years later, the Ford Ranger Raptor has evolved far beyond being a niche performance pickup. It has established itself as the benchmark for high-performance pickup trucks, seamlessly combining racing-inspired DNA, cutting-edge technology, and world-class engineering into one exceptional vehicle.
Born Tough at Ford’s Manufacturing Plant in Thailand
Although the Ranger Raptor was designed and engineered by Ford’s team in Australia, Thailand is where the vehicle truly came to life. On 25 June 2018, the first Ford Ranger Raptor rolled off the production line at Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) in Rayong.
Since then, the high-performance pickup has continued to gain worldwide popularity. In 2024, Ford expanded Ranger Raptor production to its Michigan Assembly Plant in the United States to serve the North American market. Meanwhile, Thailand continues to serve as the vehicle’s principal production and export hub, supplying the Ford Ranger Raptor to more than 106 countries worldwide.

From a Niche Production Plan to Sevenfold Growth in Global Demand
As a high-performance pickup designed for a niche market, the Ranger Raptor was initially planned for limited production at launch. However, as its outstanding performance gained worldwide recognition, global demand surged far beyond expectations.
Today, Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM) has increased Ranger Raptor production by more than seven times to meet growing demand from customers around the world. Since production began, the plant has manufactured a cumulative 251,180 Ranger Raptors¹. Australia, the Philippines, and South Africa remain the three largest export markets, playing a significant role in driving the model’s global success.
“The increase in production volume reflects more than just the popularity of the Ranger Raptor—it also demonstrates the continuous improvements we’ve made in our manufacturing quality,” said Winco Zaric, Plant Manager of Ford Thailand Manufacturing. “Over the past eight years, we have seen steady progress in both our manufacturing processes and the capabilities of our workforce. At the same time, our R/1000 metric, which measures defects identified after vehicles are in customer use, has consistently improved. This is a testament to the durability and reliability of every vehicle built at our plant.”

Engineering Precision Reflected Through Exceptional Craftsmanship
Although the Ford Ranger Raptor shares the same production line as other Ford Ranger models at Ford Thailand Manufacturing, several assembly processes have been specially engineered to preserve the vehicle’s distinctive Ford Performance DNA. These dedicated procedures utilize precision tools and advanced manufacturing technologies reserved exclusively for the Ranger Raptor.
Front Bumper Assembly
Beyond its bold and aggressive exterior design, one subtle feature that often goes unnoticed is the gap between the front bumper and the front fender. This is not an assembly imperfection, but rather a deliberate engineering feature designed to support the Ranger Raptor’s high-speed off-road capability—using the same engineering principle applied to the Ford Ranger Super Duty, Ford’s heavy-duty pickup.
While conventional pickup trucks typically use tightly clipped body panels, vehicles designed for extreme off-road performance require the body and chassis to flex independently (body-on-frame flex). The precisely calculated gap prevents the bumper and fender from contacting each other during severe chassis articulation encountered in off-road driving.
Achieving this level of precision requires specialized positioning equipment and highly skilled technicians to ensure that the panel gaps are perfectly symmetrical on both sides of every vehicle.
Suspension Assembly and Installation
One of the Ranger Raptor’s defining characteristics is its exceptional ability to conquer demanding off-road terrain, made possible by its legendary FOX suspension system.
Installing this advanced suspension is a highly specialized process that demands exceptional precision. Coil springs are aligned to millimeter-level accuracy before being fastened to the chassis using dedicated high-torque tools capable of applying up to 550 Nm of torque. Every assembly step is digitally recorded to ensure complete quality traceability and maximum safety.
In addition, the suspension system is calibrated to adapt intelligently to changing terrain. Equipped with FOX Live Valve technology, the Ranger Raptor continuously monitors road conditions and adjusts suspension damping up to 500 times per second, enabling the vehicle to respond instantly to varying surfaces and providing drivers with outstanding confidence and control in even the most challenging off-road environments.

Watt’s Linkage Rear Suspension Assembly
High-speed off-road driving demands absolute confidence in the vehicle’s stability and handling. To deliver exceptional control and ride comfort through even the most challenging terrain, the Ford Ranger Raptor is equipped with a specially engineered Watt’s Linkage rear suspension system, designed to maximize rear-wheel stability and traction.
At Ford Thailand Manufacturing (FTM), this confidence begins on the production line. Skilled technicians precisely align the chassis and rear axle to ensure perfect symmetry before assembly. A key aspect of the process is that the suspension fasteners are tightened only after the vehicle’s full weight is resting on all four wheels. This method eliminates residual stress within the suspension joints, ensuring optimal suspension geometry under real-world driving conditions.
This meticulous attention to detail is essential to delivering the Ranger Raptor’s renowned ride comfort, handling precision, long-term durability, and outstanding off-road capability.
Factory-Applied Graphics (Decal Installation)
To ensure every customer receives a vehicle with a flawless factory finish, the Ranger Raptor’s signature body graphics are installed under strictly controlled conditions inside a dedicated temperature- and dust-controlled facility.
A team of more than 10 specially trained technicians oversees the installation and performs comprehensive quality inspections on every vehicle, ensuring that each graphic is applied with exceptional precision and consistency.
These meticulous assembly processes are made possible not only through advanced manufacturing technology but also through the expertise of highly trained specialists. Their craftsmanship ensures that every Ranger Raptor meets the uncompromising quality and performance standards of Ford Performance.

The Power of the Right-First-Time Mindset
Behind every high-quality vehicle produced at Ford Thailand Manufacturing is the company’s Right-First-Time Mindset.
Every employee is committed to maintaining the highest quality standards throughout every stage of the manufacturing process. By paying close attention to every detail and proactively addressing any irregularity at their workstation, employees help prevent defects from progressing through the production line. The ultimate objective is to build every vehicle correctly the first time, without requiring rework during production—a manufacturing benchmark known as First Run Capability (FRC).
“We extend these rigorous quality standards throughout Ford’s supplier network to ensure quality is built into every component from the very beginning,” added Winco Zaric, Plant Manager of Ford Thailand Manufacturing. “Our Quality Assurance team works closely with Supplier Technical Assistance and the Product Development Engineering & Plant Vehicle Team to provide technical guidance and continuous support to suppliers, ensuring that every component meets Ford’s exacting quality requirements. We also conduct regular Gemba Walks at supplier facilities to observe production firsthand and identify opportunities for continuous improvement. This collaborative approach ensures that every part entering our production line has been thoroughly inspected and meets the highest standards before being assembled into vehicles delivered to customers around the world.”

Eight Years of Raising the Benchmark
Over the past eight years, the Ford Ranger Raptor has proven that a pickup truck can be far more than a practical utility vehicle. It has redefined the segment by delivering exhilarating performance, exceptional off-road capability, and a driving experience that complements a wide range of lifestyles.
This global success has been made possible through the unwavering dedication, precision, and craftsmanship of the people behind every vehicle, as Ford continues to refine its manufacturing processes and raise the standard of automotive quality without compromise.
