A Journey of Inspired Design at TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo Elegantly Weaves in the Beauty of Land and Sea

Cradled along the pristine shores of Wae Rana Beach, TA’AKTANA, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Labuan Bajo, takes inspiration from the beauty of land and sea through its design philosophy. As part of Marriott International’s luxury portfolio, TA’AKTANA embodies the rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and traditions of the island’s communities. The resort is thoughtfully designed to provide unparalleled comfort, featuring 70 guest rooms comprising 45 suites, 25 villas, and a spectacular Three-Bedroom Mansion, each seamlessly blending local tradition with state-of-the-art facilities and luxurious amenities.

TA’AKTANA, meaning “green land” in the Manggarai language, embodies the resort’s profound connection to the lush landscapes and rich cultural heritage of its surroundings. Inspired by the harmonious relationship between the sea-faring Bajo people and the land-rooted Manggarai communities, designer Alvin Jo of A&P Interior has crafted a design philosophy that captures the essence of Labuan Bajo’s natural beauty and cultural depth. Architectural and interior elements thoughtfully incorporate iconic symbols such as the spider web-patterned Lingko rice fields and traditional local motifs, offering guests an immersive experience that reflects the soul of the island.

This journey unfolds as a gentle transition from grounded, land-rooted expressions to those inspired by the rhythm of the sea. In the guestrooms, geometric motifs referencing Aksara Lota, the ancient script of the Ende people, root the space in local heritage. These are complemented by coastal influences and organic forms such as shagreen-like panels, woven pendants reminiscent of artisanal fishing tools, and coral-hued rugs that echo the surrounding marine landscape. A continuous interplay of tones and textures blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, while open layouts and natural materials foster a deep connection to the environment.

This design philosophy extends seamlessly into the resort’s dining venues; each imbued with a distinctive narrative shaped by its setting and material palette. Carved timber, volcanic stone, and handwoven textiles speak to the island’s topography and artisanal heritage. At the heart of the resort, Salang Hill rises above the ocean as a wedding chapel and an architectural symbol of unity, rich in cultural meaning and emotional depth.

Guided by a commitment to sustainability and cultural preservation, the resort’s design embraces collaboration with local artisans. Handcrafted details offer a contemporary interpretation of Manggarai traditions, and environmentally conscious practices are integrated throughout the property, from lobby artworks made of recycled plastics to the use of climate-resilient materials, reflecting a design ethos that marries ecological responsibility with understated luxury.

TA’AKTANA offers a narrative designed to stir emotion and evoke a sense of place. Through storytelling shaped by the soul of Labuan Bajo, the resort bridges past and present, setting a new benchmark in hospitality, where timeless design and cultural reverence converge in harmony.
