As Lunar New Year celebrations across the region grow increasingly energetic and urban-centred, Garrya Mù Cang Chải introduces a more contemplative way to mark the beginning of the year. Framed by mist-laden rice terraces in Vietnam’s northern highlands, the retreat invites travellers to encounter Tet as it unfolds naturally — shaped by wellbeing, cultural continuity and the rhythms of highland life. Rather than spectacle or excess, the Tet experience offers meaningful festive escape for those seeking to begin the year with clarity and purpose.

A Mindful Beginning: Wellness Rituals for Renewal
Guests are welcomed into the New Year with a series of restorative wellness moments designed to encourage reflection and intention. On New Year’s Eve, guests can partake in a candlelight Sound Meditation, guided by the resonant tones of tongue drums and singing bowls, complemented by warm tea — a gentle transition into the year ahead. The first morning of the year begins with Sunrise Yoga to reconnect the body and breath against the crisp mountain air and expansive views of the highlands. Throughout the festive period, moments of repose continue with Tet Serenity Afternoon Tea, featuring highland teas and traditional sweets crafted for unhurried enjoyment.

Celebrating Tet Through Taste
Culinary experiences at Garrya Mù Cang Chải pay homage to the region’s seasonal produce and festive traditions. Lunar New Year Tet Set Menus present flavours associated with reunion and abundance, spotlighting ingredients sourced from the surrounding highlands. By day, the atmosphere shifts with Taste of the Highlands – Street Food Market which draws inspiration from local chợ phiên (traditional markets), offering an array of regional street food and handmade treats in a relaxed daytime setting. Guests may also participate in Traditional Tet Cooking and Healthy Mixology Classes, exploring festive recipes and nourishing beverages rooted in local culinary practices.

Living Traditions with the Hmong Community
At the heart of the Tet experience is meaningful cultural exchange with the local Hmong community. Guests are invited to observe and engage with Tet as it is lived within neighbouring villages, without staged performances or curated displays. Experiences include Traditional Tet Preparations, including the pounding of bánh dày and observing year-end household customs, alongside visits to Community Rituals and Spring Festivals, where gratitude ceremonies and communal gatherings take place. From the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, guests may also witness the region’s Highland Games and Wedding Season, marked by traditional games, pao throwing and celebratory wedding rituals that signal the arrival of spring.

Through these grounded encounters, Garrya Mù Cang Chải presents a Lunar New Year journey defined by authenticity and ease — honouring tradition, nurturing wellbeing, and offering a thoughtful way to begin the year.
