Cultural Foundations, Contemporary Vision: HKS’ Architectural Masterpiece Reimagines Luxury Hospitality in Yining, Xinjiang

Interdisciplinary global design firm HKS delivers an immersive experience shaped by 40 cultures and the spirit of the Silk Road with the opening of the Huamei Resort Yining InterContinental and EVEN Hotel Complex in July 2025.
Award-winning architecture firm HKS proudly announces the completion of the meticulously designed InterContinental Yining Hotel at Huamei Resort Yining InterContinental and EVEN Hotel Complex, an aspirational destination celebrating the rich mosaic of 40 ethnic cultures through an immersive courtyard experience. Set against the backdrop of the majestic Ili River and the distant Tianshan Mountains, the projectofficially launches this July, unveiling a landmark where architectural sophistication and cultural narrative seamlessly converge. Developed by China Green Development Group (CGDG) and designed by HKS, the new resort development spans over 65,000 square meters and encompasses the InterContinental Hotel, EVEN Hotel, and a multi-functional convention center, setting a new benchmark for luxury hospitality in Xinjiang.
Design Rooted in Culture, Framed by Nature
At the heart of the architectural vision lies the “River Valley Courtyard”, a concept that reimagines the timeless courtyard traditions of Ili’s folk houses for a contemporary luxury setting. HKS drew inspiration from the region’s vernacular architecture, adopting a distinctive “品”-shaped layout, a nod to Yining’s traditional residential structures. This composition unfolds as interconnected courtyards that reflect the layered rhythms of local daily life in Xinjiang. This spatial arrangement balances openness and privacy along two carefully orchestrated axes. The outer axis features a tree-shaded arrival area, flowing into a welcoming drop-off courtyard, and a mountain-view corridor framing the distant vistas of the Tianshan range, while the inner axis is anchored by a Silk Road cultural corridor that connects key public areas and weaves local heritage with contemporary design.
Throughout the resort, the design artfully translates local culture into a distinctive architectural identity. On the InterContinental Hotel’s north façade, shimmering metallic louvers evoke the flowing currents of the Ili River, an homage to the waterway that shaped the region’s identity. To the south, every guest room opens out toward the river valley, framed by clean rectangular lines and transparent volumes that create a dramatic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day. In every detail, HKS’ intentional design blurs the line between built environment and natural landscape, drawing the outdoors inward to create an enveloping experience where cultural heritage, modern comfort and the rhythms of the surrounding valley converge.

A Choreographed Guest Experience
Visitors move through a thoughtfully orchestrated sequence: arriving via a tree-lined boulevard, transitioning through a refined drop-off courtyard, strolling through a mountain-view promenade to ultimately enter the Silk Road-inspired cultural corridor. Each moment unfolds as a dialogue between heritage and hospitality, creating a multidimensional guest journey shaped by place and purpose. This immersive spatial journey exemplifies HKS’ esteemed globally hospitality approach, where cultural sensitivity, design storytelling and guest-centric sensibilities converge to bridge tradition and modernity.
As dusk descends, the experience evolves – the architecture transforms into a luminous stage, casting a warm glow that harmonizes with nearby cultural landmarks, painting Yining’s skyline with quiet grandeur. Dynamic lighting animates the façades, transforming the resort into a mesmerizing shifting visual tapestry that leaves lasting impressions of the Ili Valley after dark.
