Concept design

Every part of the design concept for PAYAA hotel is inspired by the origin story of the city of Pattaya. As the story goes, during the Ayutthaya period (1700s), Pattaya was just a small fishing village. King Taksin and his army were forced to retreat East during the Burmese invasion of Thailand. On their way to Chanthaburi, the troops found respite in our small town. In the end of the war, this very army which rested here in Pattaya was able to fight back and restore inde pendence to Thailand, making Pattaya a culturally significant resting point for travelers. The area where the army stayed was, at the time, called “Thappraya” which was later modified to “Pattaya”, the name we know today. This is one of the most culturally significant cities in Thailand for this reason, and this story is one of the most important to Siam’s history. So, we honor this tale and the significance of our city through the design of our hotel PAYAA.
The Logo

Charles Calton was a late 18th century landscape watercolor artist known for designing many European coat-of-arms and royal family crests. His style is sophisticated and detailed, yet elegantly simple. We feel this embodies PAYAA, but choose to blend it with ancient Thai styling to create something completely unique to PAYAA while still preserving elements of both. The Andarusian horse and elephant present in the logo are both significant to Thai culture as they both served as companions during battle for Thai soldiers in the Ayutthaya period. The letter P (for PAYAA) at the top of our crest is composed of a Thai warrior’s sword and hat. Finally, the colors we chose — black, gold, and vermillion — were commonly used in Thai warlords’ uniforms and these colors also represent luxury, power, and prosperity.
Hotel Lobby

The hotel lobby is like a gathering place for our guests and staff. The mural behind the front desk tells the story of King Taksin’s retreat in a style similar to that present on the local bank notes. The background illustrates the map of Siam which was found on the walls of the grand palace in Bangkok. Like our logo, we blend western and eastern styles with a lithographic powder paint medium to create something modern and truly unique to PAYAA.
The front desk is composed of two real antique Burmese chests made from ancient teak wood, which stands as a physical relic of the Thai history PAYAA represents. Chests like these would have been used to transport valuables alongside battalions of troops in the Ayutthaya period. The choice of wood throughout the hotel lobby reflects traditional Thai design, similar to the wooden ceiling decorations which mimic the interlaced wood poles of a traveling soldiers’ tent.
Chan Restaurant

Chan is a traditional Thai restaurant where we offer authentic local Thai cuisine. Like Taksin’s troops, we know you come to Pattaya looking for rest and good local food. We aim to share the charms of Thai spices and herbs using only local fresh ingredients. The floor of the restaurant uses red tiles which, together with the drapes and chandeliers, convey a sense of regality inspired by the lords who lead King Taksin’s army. Similarly, the walls of our restaurants are subtly inspired by the designs present on ancient Thai military armor. The curtains can be closed and opened to create a flexible space which can be both public and welcoming or intimate and private for small dinners, afternoon tea, or seminars.
Gather Ground Café

The Gather Ground Cafe is the gathering point for PAYAA, like the center of a resting grounds for weary travelers. We aim to create an inviting space for people to congregate after a long day. While we use this space to serve breakfast to the hotel guests, we specifically provide a street-front entrance to integrate into the local community by serving to walk-in customers. At Gather Ground, we serve coffee from local beans, roasted on site a few steps away from the cafe itself. We source our beans locally from Doi Pang Khon in Nan Province and from Doi Chang and Doi Mae Chedi in Chiang Rai.

We are proud to share the rare and unique flavor of Thai coffee beans to our guests. Behind a glass wall in the cafe entrance, you can find our American hand-made coffee roasting machine “San Franciscan”. It is a charming manual coffee roaster which requires a certain expertise to operate, but produces beautifully roasted coffee. In preparing our drinks, we choose to grind our espresso beans slightly coarser than usual to extract a smoother shot. We use less water and pressure and pull for longer than a traditional espresso to ensure a smooth less bitter taste with a modern flavor profile that we are sure you’ll love.

Similar to our coffee, we use single-origin cocoa grown locally in Thailand from either Phetchanbun, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Is Thammarat, or Rayong for our chocolate. We use medium roasted cocoa for a se ductive, mellow, slightly fruity, and easy to drink flavor. Since we use real cocoa, our chocolate also retains all the health benefits of fresh cocoa butter. All the food is made-in-house from the sauces to the jams to the juice. All desserts are made locally from scratch by “Tea Factory” and “More Restaurant”, which are two bakeries in Pattaya owned by the same owners of the hotel. If you like the cafe, please check them out.
Bar Mak Kham

The outer garden is called Bar Mak Kham, named for the tamarind tree in the center of the courtyard. The tree is over 60 years old and is the only tree preserved from the original land before the hotel’s development. As the center of our oasis, it provides shade for our guests and staff and serves as a natural anchor point to ground the space. Surrounding the perimeter of the courtyard are small gardens where we grow Thai herbs which we use in our kitchen. We welcome you to enjoy food from the cafe or afternoon tea in this space. We even host small events here from time to time.
Bar Drunken Piti

Drunken Piti is our rooftop bar and pool space. We design the entry to this space like a forest pathway with winding curves between thick greenery. We want our guests to feel like they are discovering a waterfall oasis as if they were traveling soldiers discovering the beauty of Pattaya. We chose to decorate the bar with animal effigy statues to reflect those that Thai soldiers would have worshiped before battle. The pool tiles are In the style of Thai fabric patterns which shimmer under the water. We encourage our guests to take photos of this beautiful space with its views of the surrounding streets, greenery, and sea.
Accommodations

In keeping with the traveling warrior design theme, we designed each room after a warrior tent. The curtain doors separate the washroom and living space like a tent. The stripes on the ceiling reflect the stripes you might see on a Thai tent. All the furniture in the room is designed to be light and portable too. The shower room and bathroom are separated for convenience and aesthetics. To ensure a luxurious experience we use high quality “Dream Master” bedding and leather accents throughout the room. And finally, the center piece of the washroom is a bathtub capable of running water as hot as 45 degrees so you can turn your room into your own private Onsen.
Tea & Coffee

As tea enthusiasts, the owners of PAYAA made sure to select only the best tea for the rooms. This particular tea is a wild tea from Chiang Rai. This tea is picked from trees that are currently over 100 years old. The tea is delicious and mild with a uniquely earthy aroma. The producer of this tea also carefully plants over 350 new trees per year. The coffee we provide is the same Thai coffee beans roasted and ground in the Gather Ground Cafe. We offer our coffee with a Tokyo drip style brewer for convenience. We highly recommend you give them both a try during your stay as these are not any old hotel accommodations.
Water Purifier
Since we are committed to sustainability and reducing global waste, we provide a clean water filter station on the first floor next to the reception desk for customers to refill their reusable bottles before leaving the hotel. This will help reduce waste by avoiding bottled water while you are out exploring Pattaya.
