The iconic InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town has unveiled a transformative refresh that seamlessly blends contemporary design with the property’s distinctive historical elegance, honouring its enduring legacy as a landmark destination within the V&A Waterfront. Drawing inspiration from the hotel’s unique position between land and water, LW Design Group envisioned the renewed interiors as a fluid dialogue between nostalgia and contemporary luxury, enriching every stage of the guest journey—from uninterrupted harbour views experienced upon arrival in the reception lobby to the private sanctuary of the suites.

Return Through Space and Story

Every detail of the interior has been thoughtfully curated, offering a quiet tribute to both the hotel’s heritage and Cape Town’s rich maritime history. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into a grand double-height lobby, where a sculptural ceiling canopy draws the eye upward, its form inspired by the hull of a boat and serving as a defining architectural feature within the space.

At the heart of the lobby lounge, a central feature bar anchors the space beneath the canopy, creating a sense of intimacy within the openness of the surrounding volume. Throughout the interior, subtle design gestures reinforce the narrative, from the gentle curves of the banquette seating to the refined profiles of the bar, echoing the flowing contours of the shoreline. Guided by LW Design Group’s design direction, these elements were intentionally crafted to pay homage to the hotel’s unique waterfront setting.

This design language extends into the Presidential and Superior Suites, as well as Flint & Fennel, the hotel’s signature ground-floor restaurant. Each space has been carefully curated to evoke a distinct sense of place and discovery, with every detail contributing to an experience that honours the hotel’s enduring legacy while celebrating its next chapter.

Crafted in Texture and Tone

Materiality and colour play an equally important role in the refurbishment narrative, supporting the careful preservation of the hotel’s historic character. Layered textures and tactile finishes have been thoughtfully curated and paired with a warm, inviting palette to create an atmosphere of understated luxury, enriching the guest experience through a heightened sense of comfort and place.

Rooted in a design approach that honours the property’s heritage, key historical features have been retained, including the preservation of decorative marble detailing and original parquet flooring. This connection to place is further reinforced through the celebration of local craftsmanship, showcasing South African artistry in elements such as the statement stone fireplaces within the lobby lounge and the custom hand-painted mural tiles that celebrate the pool deck.

Given the delicate complexity of reworking an existing celebrated landmark structure, extensive collaboration was required between the architectural, structural, MEP, lighting, and kitchen consultants, together with LW Design Group’s senior design team — Gina Munro, Rachel Kidd, and Shereen Hassanein to carefully integrate the renewed vision into the operational framework of the hotel. Balancing heritage with contemporary sophistication, the transformed property ushers in a renewed chapter for one of Cape Town’s most iconic destinations.
