FOUR JEAN-MICHEL GATHY DESIGNED HOTELS NAMED AMONG THE WORLD’S 50 BEST HOTELS 2026

The recognition follows Jean-Michel Gathy’s Outstanding Achievement Award at Global Hospitality Talk Bangkok

Four hotels featuring the work of Jean-Michel Gathy and his team at Denniston have been recognised in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 rankings. Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River ranks No. 3, while Aman Nai Lert Bangkok makes its debut on the list at No. 48. On the extended ranking, Janu Tokyo and Aman New York are placed at No. 52 and No. 87, respectively. Together, these four hotels demonstrate the breadth and versatility of Gathy’s hospitality portfolio, shaped through collaborations with three distinct brands and a deep understanding of each destination.

The rankings mark another milestone for Jean-Michel, who received the Outstanding Achievement Award at Global Hospitality Talk Bangkok earlier this month. Presented in recognition of his enduring influence on hospitality design, the accolade reflects a career spanning more than four decades.

Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River

At Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River, the river is integral to the design. Stretching along 200 metres of waterfront, the hotel is arranged by Jean-Michel and Denniston as a sequence of cascading buildings, green courtyards, terraces and water features. Each transition reveals a different view, while high ceilings and glass walls draw daylight deep into the interiors. The movement of water continues throughout the property, echoing the flow of the Chao Phraya and giving this urban hotel the openness and ease of a resort.

Aman Nai Lert Bangkok

Aman Nai Lert Bangkok draws inspiration from a more secluded side of the capital. Set within the seven-acre Nai Lert Park, Jean-Michel draws on the history of the nearby family home, bringing Thai craftsmanship into dialogue with Aman’s contemporary design language. A century-old Sompong tree forms the living centrepiece of the hotel, around which the building is shaped, with an elliptical opening allowing the tree to remain visible as guests move through the space. Natural textures, works by local artisans and a collection of antiques further strengthen the connection to the site, while the suites look out across the park and Bangkok beyond.

Janu Tokyo

At Janu Tokyo in Azabudai Hills, Jean-Michel interprets the character of Janu through an interplay of composed interiors and lively communal spaces. Hand-applied sakan plaster and warm, earthy tones lend the guest rooms a quiet, tactile quality, while sliding panels conceal storage and allow the spaces to remain open and uncluttered. Elsewhere, colour, artwork and richly detailed dining spaces reflect the sociable energy of the brand. From its guest rooms to its expansive wellness facilities, Janu Tokyo is designed to offer both moments of retreat and opportunities for connection.

Aman New York

For Aman New York, Jean-Michel’s starting point was the historic Crown Building and the contrast between its prominent Fifth Avenue address and Aman’s promise of tranquillity. The building’s Beaux-Arts grandeur is balanced by muted colours, natural woods and layers of panelling that soften sound throughout the interiors. Every suite features a working fireplace, bringing warmth to rooms high above Manhattan, while the double-height arrival space leads into dining and social venues overlooking the city. Here, heritage and contemporary hospitality come together while preserving the distinctive character of both.

The four hotels differ in setting, scale and spirit. Their presence across this year’s rankings offers a timely perspective on Jean-Michel’s approach: allowing the identity of each brand and the distinctive qualities of its location to shape the design. From the architecture and materials to the details guests encounter and remember, each hotel reflects a considered response to its particular sense of place.
