Life and Bronze

A Sculpture Exhibition Exploring “Life” and “Bronze” through the Works and Legacy of Professor Paitoon Muangsomboon

Museum Pier invites art lovers to take part in a significant occasion honoring Thailand’s intellectual and artistic heritage through the exhibition Life and Bronze. The exhibition presents masterful sculptures alongside invaluable archival records and contributions of Professor Paitoon Muangsomboon, a renowned sculptor celebrated for his realistic sculptural works and his profound role as an influential art educator.

The artist’s heirs wish to reveal both his artistic output and his personal life through a thoughtful presentation of his tools, personal belongings, photographs, sketches, watercolor paintings from his youth, and numerous works never before exhibited. Together, these elements offer audiences an intimate glimpse into the beautiful life of a sculptor and teacher who devoted himself wholeheartedly to the art he loved.

Life and Bronze: Revealing an Artist’s Life through Bronze

The Life and Bronze exhibition goes beyond a conventional presentation of sculptural works; it unfolds as a “life record” of an artist and teacher dedicated to art. Carefully curated, the exhibition allows visitors to experience the harmony between tangible works in bronze and the artist’s life experiences, journeys, and thoughts.

Professor Paitoon’s mastery lies in his ability to capture fleeting emotions and the beauty of living beings with remarkable sensitivity. His choice of bronze as a medium lends his works a sense of solidity, dignity, and timeless elegance.

Distinctive Themes and Iconic Works

While many sculptors of his generation focused on male and female figures or monumental works, Paitoon Muangsomboon uniquely portrayed the lives of animals—such as baby goats, foals, and calves—reflecting innocence, purity, simplicity, and the natural essence of life.

In contrast, The Acrobatics Series was conceived from the artist’s imagination, drawing upon his memories of acrobats and a careful consideration of bodily movement and physical possibility. These works combine dynamic motion with graceful line and spatial composition, employing simplification and abstraction of anatomical details. The series includes Acrobatics No. 1–5 and Floorshow, which became some of his most celebrated works.

Another notable body of work is the small satirical portrait sculptures known as “Caricature Heads,” created from the artist’s memories of individuals he found intriguing and “worth sculpting.” These charming pieces serve as three-dimensional records of personalities, revealing both the artist’s humor and his undeniable sculptural expertise.

Archival Materials and Special Collectibles

In addition to the invaluable sculptures, the artist’s heirs have gathered personal records and belongings never previously displayed to the public, including childhood watercolor paintings, photographs, sketches, and sculpting tools. Special commemorative items have also been produced, such as T-shirts featuring line drawings inspired by Professor Silpa Bhirasri as interpreted by Professor Paitoon Muangsomboon, as well as small sculptural figures, allowing visitors to continue appreciating and collecting his artistic legacy.
