OUTRIGGER Phi Phi Island Resort Invites Guests to Experience “Soul of Rest” — A Sanctuary of Sustainability and Local Inspiration

A newly rebranded five-star beachfront resort, OUTRIGGER Phi Phi Island Resort is designed to harmonize with the natural beauty of its coastal surroundings while offering a tranquil atmosphere rooted in sustainability and inspired by the local Urak Lawoi community.

Set to open in May 2026, the resort is located along the pristine white sands of Phi Phi Island, Thailand. It introduces a new beachfront retreat inspired by Southern Thai design and a philosophy known as “Nitra”or the “Soul of Rest”encouraging guests to experience deep relaxation and holistic rejuvenation of both body and mind.

The reimagined resort has been designed by OPENDESIGNER, a renowned Bangkok-based creative studio, with the vision of allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the charm of Phi Phi Island and the Andaman Sea. At the heart of the design lies a commitment to nature conservation, where tropical greenery, sandy shores, and limestone cliffs define the identity of the resort.

Blending seamlessly into its surroundings, the architecture appears to emerge organically from the coastline especially for guests arriving by boat, the only way to access the property. Low-rise structures gradually reveal themselves along the shore like a shimmering mirage. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with a traditional “rab khwan” ceremony and handmade beaded bracelets an intimate gesture inspired by the Urak Lawoi people.

Sutham Ketsena, Lead Designer at OPENDESIGNER, shared:
“From a design perspective, we prioritized preserving the island’s natural essence from the very beginning. Our approach is rooted in respect for the existing environment selecting materials, proportions, and forms that harmonize with the surrounding ecosystem. Our goal was to create architecture that feels as though it belongs to the island, rather than something imposed upon it, while maintaining the relaxed and distinctive spirit of Phi Phi.”

A Journey into “Nitra”: The Soul of Rest

Throughout their stay, guests are immersed in the concept of “Nitra,” expressed through thoughtfully curated experiences across the resort. Soft, layered neutral tones and open designs that embrace natural light help ease visual tension and create a calming environment. Natural materials such as wood, rattan, rope, and stone evoke warmth and serenity, while Southern Thai textiles and local handicrafts are seamlessly integrated into interiors and furnishings—gently guiding guests into a deeper state of relaxation.

The cultural heritage of the Urak Lawoi people, who have lived in harmony with nature along Thailand’s southern coast for centuries, is reflected throughout the resort. Decorative elements such as traditional fishing tools and beadwork are reinterpreted in a contemporary manner, aligning with the refined standards of a luxury resort.

Natural wood, woven textures, and stone surfaces are combined to create a tactile palette that reflects island craftsmanship, delivering a form of tropical luxury that is both understated and deeply authentic.

Private Retreats and Curated Experiences

The resort features 63 suites and villas, each designed to evoke openness, tranquility, and a deep connection to the island’s spirit. Handcrafted furniture, natural textiles, and woven details are paired with modern comforts and amenities, offering private sanctuaries that balance luxury with calm.

Shaded walkways throughout the property are thoughtfully designed with scenic pauses lounging corners and framed views that encourage guests to slow down, linger, and fully absorb their surroundings rather than simply pass through.

Dining at the resort highlights locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, including fresh seafood from the Andaman Sea, complemented by panoramic ocean views that enhance the sense of place. Meanwhile, the resort spa offers nature-inspired treatments, with a design palette drawn from traditional bead colors deep red, earthy brown, and turquoise blue believed to restore energy and promote both physical and mental well-being.

Designed for Sustainability

Sustainability is embedded in every aspect of the resort’s design. The project minimizes the use of imported materials to reduce environmental impact and transportation-related carbon emissions. Unnecessary elements that do not align with the local context have been intentionally excluded, while natural topography, ventilation, daylight, and prevailing winds are fully utilized to reduce energy consumption.
