A new chapter begins shaped by presence, participation, and shared experience

Along the untouched coastline of Bo’a, where Rote Island unfolds through rugged cliffs, empty waves, and windswept landscapes, a different kind of hospitality destination quietly takes shape. More than a resort, NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy emerges as a living environment where hospitality is not separated from community, culture, or the rhythm of everyday life, but experienced as one continuous exchange.

Developed under the leadership of owner Michael Schwab, NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy introduces a philosophy rooted in long-term impact, cultural continuity, and human connection. At its core is the Hospitality Academy, an initiative endorsed by Nobel Peace Prize laureate and President of Timor-Leste José Ramos-Horta, embodying a commitment to education, community, and hospitality as one continuous exchange.

The Hospitality Academy is intentionally designed as the first point of arrival in place of a traditional lobby. The gesture is as symbolic as it is functional, immediately positioning learning, interaction, and shared participation as the foundation of the destination. Here, young Rotenese talents, alongside selected students from Timor-Leste, are immersed in hands-on hospitality education spanning culinary arts, sustainability, service, wellness, and operations, all integrated directly into the daily rhythm of the property. Rather than existing behind the scenes, the Academy becomes inseparable from the overall experience of NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy, where learning unfolds through observation, mentorship, conversation, and participation, shaping an environment where hospitality is guided not only by technical skill, but also by presence, intuition, and genuine human connection.

The destination itself unfolds through a phased and considered approach, allowing development to evolve in harmony with the island’s landscape and surrounding community. An intimate collection of 21 villas draws inspiration from traditional Rotenese architecture, open-air living, and locally sourced materials, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces while remaining deeply connected to the surrounding environment. Currently operational are the villas, Nammo Beach Club, Bima’s Bar, surf and watersports programming, and the Hospitality Academy. Savu, the ocean-facing restaurant, the NIHI Spa Sanctuary, and the main pool are scheduled to debut in September 2026. The gradual evolution reflects a deliberate philosophy that prioritises authenticity, sensitivity to place, and meaningful growth over rapid expansion.
Experiences Shaped by the Island’s Natural Rhythm

Life at NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy moves in sync with the landscape itself. Experiences are designed not around schedules or spectacle, but around movement, exploration, and immersion within the raw beauty of the island. Along the legendary waves of Bo’a, surfing remains deeply embedded within the identity of the destination, shaped by uncrowded breaks, changing tides, and the untamed energy of the ocean. Beyond the shoreline, the island reveals itself through spearfishing expeditions, traditional fishing experiences, cycling routes, ocean adventures, and cultural encounters that offer a closer understanding of Rote’s local traditions and daily life. Elsewhere, slower moments become equally significant. Sunset walks, quiet stretches of beach, and time spent within the island’s expansive landscapes invite a deeper sense of stillness rarely found within contemporary travel. This philosophy of connection also extends into NIHI’s evolving equine programme, centred around healing, wellbeing, and the relationship between people, nature, and horses within the island environment. Every experience is approached with the same philosophy that defines NIHI itself: immersive, grounded, and deeply connected to place.
Wellness Rooted in Stillness and Nature

Wellness is approached as an intuitive extension of island life rather than a structured retreat concept. The philosophy centers on slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and creating space for restoration through simplicity, silence, and presence. Hidden within a secluded corner of the property, the upcoming NIHI Spa Sanctuary is envisioned as a quiet refuge immersed within tropical greenery, winding pathways, and open-air treatment spaces designed to dissolve into the surrounding landscape. Treatments and wellness rituals draw inspiration from the natural environment, encouraging a more organic connection between body, mind, and place. Complementing the experience is NIHI’s philosophy of wild wellness, where wellbeing is shaped not through rigid routines, but through movement, ocean air, stillness, and a deeper connection to the rhythm of the island itself.
NIHI Fit: Movement with Purpose

Extending beyond traditional fitness concepts, NIHI Fit embraces movement as part of a holistic lifestyle shaped by nature and outdoor exploration. The programme combines functional training, recovery, endurance, and mobility through experiences designed around the island’s terrain and climate. From guided workouts and strength training sessions to open-air movement practices overlooking the ocean, NIHI Fit encourages a more intentional relationship between physical wellbeing and the surrounding environment. The approach feels immersive rather than performative, shaped by fresh air, natural elements, and the freedom of movement across the island.
Culinary Experiences Inspired by Land and Sea

Culinary experiences are shaped by seasonality, locality, and the abundance of the surrounding land and ocean. Menus celebrate fresh seafood, locally grown produce, and Indonesian flavours interpreted through a refined yet understated approach. Nammo Beach Club serves as the vibrant social heart of the destination, where beachfront dining, ocean views, and long unhurried afternoons unfold against the backdrop of Bo’a’s coastline. At the centre of the culinary experience is Savu, NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy’s forthcoming open-air dining destination named after the Savu Sea, the untamed stretch of water connecting Rote, Sumba, and Timor. Designed around expansive ocean views, an open kitchen, relaxed lounge seating, and the natural rhythm of island life, Savu reflects the resort’s approach to dining: immersive, grounded, and deeply connected to place.

More than a destination, NIHI Rote & Hospitality Academy represents a long-term vision for hospitality that places equal value on people, place, and participation. Here, luxury is not defined through excess, but through immersion, cultural exchange, and the quiet privilege of experiencing life as it unfolds naturally on the island of Rote.
