LA RESIDENCIA, A BELMOND HOTEL, MALLORCA AND THE LOEWE FOUNDATION ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS OF THEIR INAUGURAL ARTIST RESIDENCY

This season La Residencia, A Belmond Hotel, Mallorca and the LOEWE FOUNDATION are delighted to announce their brand-new partnership, launching three two-month artist residencies annually, selecting creatives from the Loewe Craft Prize’s acclaimed pool of talent.
Joining La Residencia’s established “Artists in Residencia” programme on the LOEWE FOUNDATION’s ten-year milestone anniversary, the three winners: Kaori Juzu from Japan, Deirdre McLoughlin from Ireland, and Dahye Jeong from South Korea will create work inspired by the local village of Deià — long associated with artists, writers and musicians, as well as the UNESCO protected Tramuntana mountains which provide a dramatic and inspirational backdrop.

“ARTISTS IN RESIDENCIA” – A NEW EDITION
La Residencia is proud to host this year’s “Artist in Residencia” programme with the LOEWE FOUNDATION, recognising three artists for this year’s edition, selected by a panel comprised of senior members of both LVMH Maisons, namely Sheila Loewe (LOEWE FOUNDATION Chair of the Board), Anatxu Zabalbeascoa (Craft Prize jury member, Executive Secretary of the Prize’s Expert Panel, and design correspondent for El País), Alberto Merlo Carrero (LOEWE FOUNDATION Head of Programs and Operations), Arnaud Champenois (Belmond’s Senior Vice President, Brand and Marketing), Jonathan Openshaw (Belmond’s Global Editor-in- Chief), and Thomas Moons (Belmond Area Managing Director for Spain and Portugal).

Sheila Loewe shares her enthusiasm, stating: “I’m pleased to continue supporting our alumni through opportunities to develop their work in dialogue with place. At La Residencia, the relationship between material, environment and process becomes particularly tangible. This programme reflects a shared commitment to craft and its continued evolution.”

The Alumni selected for this program are: Kaori Juzu, a jewellery artist working with conceptual metal-based forms, will be at La Residencia in May and June, where she will research notions of connectivity between object, body and environment, inspired by the island’s landscape and light. Deirdre McLoughlin, a ceramic artist working with clay-based sculptural forms and experimental shaping processes, will be in residency in July and August, during which she will reinterpret familiar environments she has previously experienced through a renewed perspective, while testing material behaviour in relation to Mallorca’s natural context. Dahye Jeong, a textile artist specialising in horsehair weaving techniques, will be in property in September and October, where she will investigate pattern, structure and material expression, drawing on the natural life and energy of the material and the Mediterranean light and nature of Mallorca.

Each artist will spend two months in residence, producing new pieces inspired by the island’s distinctive light and dramatic landscape, where mountains meet the sea. Mallorca has long drawn creative figures — from painter Joan Miró who’s paintings hang in the hotel’s very own Restaurante Miró; to composer Frédéric Chopin and poet Robert Graves — captivated by the unique destination. The intimacy of La Residencia’s privileged mountain setting offers a space for reflection, where art, nature and tranquility come together. Here, both guests and artists are invited to slow down, contemplate their surroundings, and allow creativity to unfold. During the residency, the artists will share their work with guests through informal encounters and small gatherings, including the hotel’s weekly cocktail and dedicated breakfast sessions. These moments are designed to keep the experience personal and direct, allowing guests to interact with the artists and their process in a natural and engaging way.

Now in its fourth edition, “Artists in Residencia” follows earlier collaborations with Galleria Continua in 2023 and 2024, and with Artnet in 2025. Through these editions, the hotel has supported both emerging and established artists from around the world, including Arcangelo Sassolino and Daniel Buren, both presented in collaboration with Galleria Continua under the MITICO series, as well as emerging talent Liang Fu and Berta De La Rosa. Over the years La Residencia has also maintained close relationships with leading local art institutions such as Fundació Joan Miró and Gallery RED.
A PERFECT MARRIAGE OF CRAFT AND DESTINATION
With an enduring legacy of dedication to the arts and an unwavering commitment to fostering creativity, La Residencia will offer artists the opportunity to create artwork in dialogue with Spain’s cultural landscape, the country where LOEWE was founded in 1846.

More than a place where time stands still, La Residencia encourages exploration and creativity, housing a permanent collection of over 800 original works by artists who have lived and worked in Deià and northern Mallorca, curated by Cecilie Sheridan. Displayed throughout the property and at the hotel’s own Sa Tafona Art Gallery, creating an immersive dialogue between art, environment, and the guest experience.

With art at the heart of La Residencia, guests can join “Walk and Talk” tours with the hotel’s art curator, explore the village and local art studios, and meet artisans and artists. Master classes in sculpting, line art, and silver clay are also offered with Sculptor-in-Residence Juan Waelder, who also manages the sculptures of the beautifully landscaped Poet’s Walk, where visitors can stroll and admire his distinctive ceramic, bronze, iron, and cement works.
